Originally from Florence, the Baroque artist Stefano della Bella was a patron artist of the Medici family. He created a number of prints dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This image presents the Madonna and Child in a round composition, known as a tondo, a form popularized by artists in the Italian Renaissance.
The image of the Madonna is perhaps one of the most prominent archetypes of femininity in the history of Western art. Della Bella depicts the subject in a naturalistic and less idealized manner compared to many of his artistic predecessors. In this intimate scene, the Virgin Mary holds the infant Christ seated on her lap, watching over him with a protective and loving gaze.
