The map drawn by Willem Akersloot would have been used as a tool to show all of the Dutch colonies how relentless the Spanish were in the Siege of Haarlem. As a result of religious intolerance the Spanish attacked the village of Haarlem in 1572. After almost a year the Spanish had killed everyone in the village. The hard fought battle at Haarlem was inspirational to the rest of the Dutch colonies and was an important story to the Dutch during the Eighty Years’ War.
