In 2002, Shibata arrived in the United States already a revered ceramicist in Japan. Her move greatly impacted her creative process, and this bowl marks a departure from the traditional style in which the artist had previously worked.
She continues to experiment with materials and designs. The uma-no-me, or horse-eye, design develops its pattern with repeated circles arranged over the interior surface of the bowl.
