Along with images depicting African American domestic workers and market vendors from Richmond and New Orleans during the Jim Crow era, Dashiell recorded scenes of aging Confederate veterans. During the early 20th century, reunions and reenactments of Civil War veterans were common and much-celebrated events. More than 50,000 Union and Confederate veterans gathered for the Great Reunion of 1913, held on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.
