One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Picasso created an immense body of work that included more than 1300 published prints, of which 855 were lithographs. Already familiar with woodcuts, drypoint, and etching, Picasso began making lithographs in 1919, typically working on transfer drawings rather than directly on stones or plates.
Later, the artist’s experimentation with printmaking techniques resulted in the alteration and reuse of plates and stones with such frequency that master printer Henri Deschamps referred to the plates as “completely ravaged.”
