Curator NotesTransformations: Inuit Sculptures from the Collection
September 05, 2009 to November 15, 2009
When the Inuit lived as nomadic hunters, some groups valued the elderly only as long as they could hunt or sew. With little chance of survival in the Arctic winter, infirm Inuit were expected to accept their fate, staying behind to die while their family left for a new place. Today, Inuit elders are highly respected for their knowledge of history and traditions.
