Transformations: Inuit Sculptures from the Collection
September 05, 2009 to November 15, 2009
In times of famine, shamans journeyed to the home of Sedna, the sea goddess, to appease her by combing her tangled hair. If successful, Sedna released sea mammals from her house, providing food for the starving people. This sculpture includes the facial tattoos that were common among some Inuit women until about the mid-twentieth century.
