Constans II named his favored son Constantine IV (shown together on the obverse of this coin) -co-emperor in 656, and he ordered his own brother killed to ensure the planned succession. Detested for his act of fratricide and his inability to retain the southern and eastern provinces of the Empire, Constans II was assassinated in 668.
