Victories, Orbs, & Angels: Byzantine Coins from the Collection
January 30, 2009 to June 27, 2010
The coins minted by Marcian and Tiberius II exemplify how the pagan past of the people was replaced by new Christian symbols in the 5th and 6th centuries. The image of the emperor transformed from a Roman warrior to that of a theologian. The new Christian symbol of the cross on steps replaced the pagan motif of the personification of Victory.
